The Maltese Islands are located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily. The Islands have a total land area of 316 km.
Geomara was commissioned by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), Malta, to undertake a bathymetric survey. Bathymetry was acquired using a Kongsberg 710 MKII Multibeam Echosounder System (MBES). The survey consisted of 5 areas with water depths varying from -186 to -1192m. The total surveyed kilometers for the project were 2980 km.
A subsequent sediment sampling programme was also commissioned in order to characterize the seabed.
The bathymetric survey was undertaken to ascertain seafloor topography and to obtain bathymetric information. Phase 2 of the project consisted of sediment sampling and seabed classification of the areas.
